What does a custom surfboard actually cost?
A custom board at PureGlass starts at $1,200. That number moves with construction (polyester or epoxy), fin setup, resin tint, and how complex the shape is. A $250 deposit gets your board into the queue. The balance is due before pickup or shipping.
Stock boards run $450 to $1,495, already built, no deposit, no queue. You're paying for a finished board, not a shaper's time.
Is a custom board really better made than stock?
Not necessarily. This is the part most shops won't say straight: a custom order and a stock board can come off the same production floor, glassed by the same crew, to the same standard. We build our own PureGlass boards, run production for outside brands like Firewire and Woo Surfboards, and shape custom orders, all in the same building on Placentia Ave.
What changes isn't the craftsmanship. It's the starting spec. A stock board was shaped to a general rider at that length and volume, one shaper's read on what works for most people that size. A custom board is shaped to your weight, your local break, and how you actually ride. The upside is fit. The risk runs the other way too: if you don't know exactly what to ask for, a stock board that's already proven by other riders can be the safer bet.

How long does each one take?
Stock: ready to ship in 3 to 5 business days, or pick up same-day at 1777 Placentia Ave once it's paid for (Mon-Fri 8am-5pm, Sat 9am-2pm).
Custom: we won't hand you a made-up number here. Lead time depends on what's already in the queue and how complex your spec is, and it gets confirmed when you call or submit the build form, not before. What we can tell you is the process:
- Tell us what you need. Call the shop or fill out the build form. Same-day response, free consultation.
- We build it. CNC cutting if needed, shaping, glassing, color work, fin boxes, leash plugs, all in Costa Mesa.
- Pickup or delivery. SoCal van, LAX and SNA airfreight for international orders, US ground freight for domestic volume.
Custom fin setups (FCS or Futures, single to quad) get built into the glassing step, not bolted on after, since the box placement is part of the original spec.
